Memorial Day Q&A

 Questionable Resolution

Greetings, crickets and trolls. Welcome to a special Memorial Day weekend edition of the Q&A. I'm on a much-needed vacation this week, but I was happy to have my old friend i-dig stop by to tell me that the war over Fark's inane dual voting system has finally come to a close. No more best vs. funniest. We may never know which is truly better, but I think that might be for the best. Or funniest, whatever.

Q: Why did the dual Photoshop voting system get removed?

A: Because it was probably the shittiest idea that anyone ever had in the history of Fark. Which is a monumental accomplishment. Voting on regular comments still remains, a vestigial element that will probably disappear quietly the next time the site is redesigned.

Q: Is the Leaderboard finally going to be repaired?

A: It could happen, assuming the parties involved aren't too put out with Fark management or have moved on. We'll just have to wait and see. It's been almost half a year since the Leaderboard stopped tracking stats. And frankly speaking, a lot of damage has been done to our community due to this dual voting fiasco.

Q: What should we do to rebuild?

A: Maybe a system of voting that lets you vote for THREE options. I'm sure it would be mildly unpopular at first, but over the months, people would begin to despise it. And isn't that what Photoshop is all about? Being outraged at some managerial decision that has nothing to do with Photoshop at all?

That's all for this time, gentle reader. Thanks again for stopping by, and a big thanks to i-dig for ending my self-imposed Fark boycott. Blogging about a community I no longer visited was getting to be difficult.

Stay tuned for more tearful homecomings from the Doctor!

I go over my leaderboard profile and it's like a walk down memory lane. Even now I still check it from time to time, hoping that one day the past few months will magically appear. Don't get discouaged if everyone doesn't snap to attention right away. The stupid dual voting crap drove off god knows how many, and disenfranchised almost everyone else. There is going to be a lot of rebuilding ahead of us. Just to get us back to where we were in Dec of 2011. Don't give up now.

I have actually thought about giving up on it. Who am I to fight the Squirrel tradition anyway?

It's going to take a lot of coding effort to fix this - HoboSong estimated 5hrs LOE for him just for the 1/31 site change that broke the Leaderboard outright - and there have been several updates since. HoboSong is gone. I can code and know several languages, but this isn't one of them. I can read most and can likely figure it out, but it's going to take a serious time commitment. And I'm not very optimistic that any images from Feb thru April can be retrieved; I might be able to apply a patch to include stats though.

If you have any influence, use it, because if I don't get at least 30 Fark 'Shoppers expressing an interest, the Leaderboard dies like the programs before it.

I played recently in the PSC Spring H2H tourney but nothing before that since Feb (on Fark). I'm just not a user anymore. So I want the users to express an interest. I posted in the PSAEF this AM - non-Misfits can respond there and I'll set up a poll in Misfit Squirrels too.

I'm seeing a stir of interest in the PSAEF. People do want this thing back. You can add my vote for yes, of course. I wish there were more I could do to help. There's so much I don't know about web coding, for example, everything.

It's too bad about Hobosong. People come and go, I guess. His skills humor will surely be missed in our community.
